Long Haired Chihuahua Breeders Raising Fluffy Puppies at Home

Long hair Chihuahua breeders are easy to find online and hard to check. Many fluffy Chihuahua for sale listings are resold puppies, and some are mixes sold as long coats. Every long-haired Chihuahua we sell was bred by us, from AKC registered parents, and born in our house. When you visit, you can meet a grown long coated Chihuahua in our home and see the coat your puppy is heading for.

Long coats are a recessive trait, which means a long haired puppy has to inherit the gene from both parents. Two long coat parents always produce long coat puppies. That is why we can tell you with confidence which puppies in a litter will grow the full feathered coat, even when it is barely showing at 8 weeks.

Fluffy Chihuahua Puppies: What a Long Coat Looks Like at 8 Weeks

Do not judge a long coat Chihuahua puppy by its first photos. At 8 weeks most long coats look like slightly fluffy smooth coats. The giveaways are a soft, longer coat behind the ears, a fuller tail and a little fringe on the backs of the legs. If you want a preview of the adult coat, look at the mother on the puppy's profile.

Between about 4 and 10 months, long coat puppies go through what breeders call the "puppy uglies". The puppy fuzz drops out, the body coat can look thin and the ear fringes are barely there. This is normal. The full feathering on the ears, ruff, britches and plumed tail usually arrives between 18 and 24 months.

Long Haired Chihuahua Grooming: What It Really Takes

A long haired Chihuahua is not a high-maintenance dog. The coat is single or lightly double, soft rather than woolly, and it rarely mats except behind the ears and in the armpits. Our routine for adults:

  • Brush two or three times a week with a small pin brush, then run a fine metal comb behind the ears.
  • Bath every 3 to 4 weeks with a gentle dog shampoo. Dry thoroughly; long coats hold water and Chihuahuas chill quickly.
  • Trim the hair between the paw pads every month so your dog does not slip on hard floors.
  • Never shave a long coat Chihuahua. It may not grow back the same.

Long coats shed in seasonal blows, usually spring and fall, and very little in between. Smooth coats shed lightly all year. Our full long coat vs smooth coat Chihuahua comparison goes into shedding, allergies and cold tolerance.

Long Coat Chihuahua Size, Temperament and Health

Coat length does not change size. We list each long coat puppy in one of two size tiers: Teacup, with a projected adult weight of 3 to 4 lbs, or Toy, with a projected adult weight of 4 to 6 lbs. The breed standard caps adults at 6 pounds for both coats. Every projection is an estimate based on the parents' weights and the puppy's growth, not a guarantee. Use our Chihuahua weight chart to see how a puppy's current weight projects to adult size, or see our teacup Chihuahua puppies, which include long coats when a litter has them.

Temperament comes from the parents and from early handling, not from the coat. That said, many of our families tell us their long coat feels softer to cuddle, and that matters if your Chihuahua will spend most of the day in your lap.

Health concerns are the same as for any Chihuahua: dental crowding, luxating patellas, low blood sugar in young puppies and tracheal sensitivity. That last one is why we send every puppy home with advice to use a harness, never a collar, for walks. Our health guarantee covers genetic conditions for 1 years.

Long Coat Chihuahua Colors We Breed

We see fawn, cream, red, black and tan, chocolate and tri-color long coats in our litters. Color does not change temperament or health. We do not breed merle. Our Chihuahua colors guide explains why and shows the full range of colors and markings.

Who a Long Coat Chihuahua Suits Best

Our opinion after years of placing both coats: choose a long coat if you live somewhere with real winters, you enjoy a weekly grooming session with your dog on your lap, and you would rather vacuum twice a year than twice a week. Choose a smooth coat Chihuahua puppy if you want the lowest-maintenance dog possible.

Long Coat Chihuahua Puppy Questions

When does a long coat Chihuahua get its full coat?

A long coat Chihuahua usually grows its full adult coat between 18 and 24 months. Puppies go through an awkward stage around 4 to 10 months when the soft puppy fuzz sheds and the adult feathering has not filled in yet. Spayed females and neutered males often grow a slightly fuller coat than intact dogs.

Do long haired Chihuahuas shed a lot?

Long haired Chihuahuas shed less often than most people expect but in bigger seasonal bursts, usually in spring and fall. Between those sheds you will see far less loose hair than with a smooth coat. Brushing two or three times a week with a pin brush and metal comb keeps shedding under control.

Are long coat Chihuahua puppies more expensive?

In many litters long coat Chihuahua puppies are priced a little higher because demand is higher, but at our home the coat type is only one factor alongside color and gender. Our current long coat prices are listed in the table on this page and range within our usual $650 to $850.

Can two smooth coat parents have a long coat puppy?

Yes. The long coat gene is recessive, so two smooth coat parents that both carry it can produce long coat puppies. Two long coat parents, on the other hand, can only produce long coat puppies. That is why the parents' coats on each puppy profile are a useful guide.

Where can I find long haired Chihuahua breeders near me?

We raise long haired Chihuahua puppies in our home in Temple, Texas. Families within driving distance collect from us by appointment and meet the mother. Families further away can have one of us fly the puppy to them in the cabin and hand it over in person, or send someone they trust to collect it.
