Where to Buy a Teacup Chihuahua (and Where Not To)

Teacup Chihuahuas are some of the most searched-for puppies in the country, and some of the most faked. We breed them, so here is our straight answer on where to buy a teacup Chihuahua, what each kind of seller really offers, and what to see with your own eyes before you pay.

By the Diamond Chihuahuas family. Updated October 29, 2026.

The best place to buy a teacup Chihuahua is directly from the breeder who raised it, where you can meet the mother, see the puppy's weight records and read the contract before you pay. Brokers, pet stores and online-only sellers can rarely show you any of that. Wherever you buy, the rule is the same: meet the puppy and its mother in person, from the breeder's home or at a handover, before the balance changes hands.

Rescue deserves a second look. Chihuahuas are one of the most common breeds in US shelters, and with an adult you see the final size and personality on day one. If you have your heart set on a puppy, a breeder is the way to go.

Where to find a teacup Chihuahua breeder you can trust

Start wide, then narrow down hard. Good places to find breeders include searching for Chihuahua breeders in your state, the AKC Marketplace, and breed club listings. Then check each breeder against four things before you even ask about a specific puppy:

  • Can you visit, or at least meet them in person? A breeder with nothing to hide lets you see the mother and where the litter is raised, by appointment.
  • Are prices on the listings? A price that only exists in private messages tends to change as the conversation goes.
  • Is the contract published? You should be able to read the health guarantee and terms before any money moves.
  • Do they give an honest size estimate? Look for a range with the parents' weights behind it. Anyone promising an adult under 2 pounds is selling a word, not a dog.

The tricks scammers use, from fake shipping fees to stolen photos, are covered step by step in our Chihuahua puppy scams guide.

Where to get a teacup Chihuahua if there is no breeder near you

Not every state has a teacup Chihuahua breeder worth buying from, and the closest seller is not always the safest one. A breeder a day's drive away, or one who delivers the puppy to you in person, is a better bet than a local seller who will not let you see the mother.

That is how many of our families buy. Families within driving distance collect from our home in Temple, Texas. Families further away have us fly the puppy to them in the cabin, and we hand it over in person at their airport, or they send someone they trust to collect it. Either way, the puppy never travels alone in cargo. We have pages for families in Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth, Florida, California and more, and the full details are on our Chihuahua puppy delivery page.

Many teacup listings use the same handful of photos copied across dozens of websites, often of puppies propped in actual teacups. A real breeder's photos look like a real home: the same blankets, floors and furniture across every puppy, with new photos as the puppy grows. Run any listing photo through a reverse image search before you get attached. If it appears on another site under another name, move on.

What to see before you pay for a teacup Chihuahua

By the time you pay the balance, you should have seen all of this for that specific puppy:

  1. The puppy and its mother, in person.
  2. The puppy's weight log and the parents' adult weights.
  3. A vet record with the puppy's vaccines and vet check.
  4. Registration details you can confirm with the registry yourself.
  5. A written contract and health guarantee.
  6. A feeding plan for the first weeks, because teacups are prone to low blood sugar.

If a seller cannot show you most of that list, the low price or the cute photos are not worth the risk.

Buying a Teacup Chihuahua: Questions

Where can I buy a teacup Chihuahua?

The safest place to buy a teacup Chihuahua is directly from the breeder who raised it, where you can meet the mother, see the puppy's weight records and read a written contract and health guarantee. Avoid sellers who will only ship the puppy, will not show you the mother, or ask for payment by gift card, wire or crypto.

Can I buy a teacup Chihuahua online?

You can find one online, but do not buy one sight unseen from a stranger. Use the internet to find a breeder, then meet the puppy and its mother in person, either at the breeder's home or when the breeder hands the puppy to you. Online-only sales are where most Chihuahua puppy scams happen.

Where can I get a teacup Chihuahua near me?

Search for Chihuahua breeders in your state, then check each one: can you visit by appointment, are prices on the listings, and is the contract published? If no breeder near you passes, a breeder further away who delivers the puppy in person is safer than a local seller who fails those checks.

Is it better to buy a teacup Chihuahua from a breeder or a pet store?

A breeder. Pet store puppies usually come from large commercial kennels, and you almost never meet either parent or learn the puppy's real size history. A good breeder can tell you how much the puppy weighed every day of its life and introduce you to its mother.
